Talking Mission - Pisey Soeurn

Can you introduce yourself and your work as an International Programs Coordinator at Catholic Mission?

Hello, my name is Pisey Soeurn, I am the International Programs Coordinator at Catholic Mission and have worked here for almost six years. I was one of the first staff to be employed in Regional Mission Development Office in Cambodia to develop the work that we are doing in Asia-Pacific.

Working out of the Regional Mission Development Office in Cambodia, can you share some of the highlights of your work?

Working from the Regional Mission Development Office in Cambodia, I have the privilege to be in direct contact with the missionaries on the ground creating a meaningful change. One of the highlights in my job, is discovering new opportunities for projects and ensuring they make a real, positive impact. I enjoy the relationships part of my job, by maintaining and nurturing them with our local and international partners, we are able to provide the support they need to deliver these projects effectively. Monitoring and evaluating our progress is another key part of what I do, it represents an essential part of my job to ensure that projects are delivering the expected impact in the community. I also enjoy facilitating staff trips, welcoming donors, and leading immersion programs, as they enable people from Australia to discover the mission work done on the ground and how their contributions back make an impact here. One of the key things that I find particularly rewarding is the opportunity to work across different cultures throughout Asia, which has enriched me both professionally and personally.

How do you see your work aligning with the work of Mission?

Through my work, I am able to provide support and help to people in need through the local Catholic Church. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see how we can make a real difference in their lives, not just by providing material support but by helping them regain their dignity and find true fulfilment in society. Being part of this journey, witnessing people grow and thrive, has been deeply rewarding. It’s more than just a job for me, it’s a way to connect with others and contribute to building a stronger, more hopeful community, and in that sense, I think it aligns with God’s Mission.

Can you share about the importance of working directly with the partners and missionaries on the ground and the direct impact it has on local communities?

Working directly with partners and missionaries on the ground is crucial because it allows us to have a direct and meaningful impact on local communities. These on-the-ground connections enable us to truly understand the unique challenges that communities face and to address them in a way that is effective and that is culturally sensitive. By collaborating closely with the people who live and work within the community, we can identify the most pressing issues and develop tailored solutions that resonate with the people we serve. This approach fosters trust and cooperation, ensuring that the efforts we undertake are not only impactful but also sustainable. It allows us to walk alongside the community, working through challenges together, which strengthens relationships and enhances the overall success of our projects.

Can you share the importance of working towards capacity building with our partners?

Working towards capacity building with our partners is crucial in helping them expand their thinking and address the gaps, issues, and resource needs within their communities and dioceses. By equipping them with the tools and knowledge to face the issues existing, we raise awareness and prepare them to work towards a future where their communities are stronger and more self-reliant. This approach is a critical aspect of any project and relationship we have with our partners. By bringing in technical expertise that can be applied at the local level, we empower them to effectively address challenges and create sustainable, long-term solutions.

After working for Catholic Mission for the last 6 years, is there any special story that have touch your heart and that you would like to share with us?

Before I began this journey, I never imagined that I could have such a meaningful impact on the lives of others, especially on the people most in need. But through my work, I've come to realise just how much I can contribute. Seeing the difference we're making, both as individuals and as an organisation, has been incredibly rewarding. I’m proud not only of what I’ve been able to achieve personally but also of the collective impact we've had on helping the people who need it most. It’s a privilege to be part of something that brings real positive change to people's lives.
