A Generous and Kind Hand: The Life-Giving Work at the Don Bosco Caring Center

“We should be generous and kind in our giving and in our living” was once said by a friend of Catholic Mission. These words resonate with the work done by missionaries worldwide as through their actions they embody the importance of giving of oneself and providing a kind hand to the people most in need. As they invite people to share the banquet, we are reminded in the word of Matthew (22:9) of the importance of including all our sisters and brothers from all paths of lives “Go and invite everyone to the banquet”.

The work done at the Don Bosco Caring Center is a great example of the embodiment of this principle, as they provide a kind and loving home to children left to fend for themselves in the street of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Established in 2003, the Caring Center is dedicated to providing a secure environment and shelter for some of the children who live on the streets in the world’s coldest capital. It is estimated that around 4,000 children are currently experiencing homelessness in Ulaanbaatar.

Namdag Ivgeelt, a social worker at the Caring Center since 2021, knows the profound impact this haven has on the lives of so many children, providing not just shelter but a chance for a brighter future.

“Besides the legislation for the care and protection of children, what we really need are childcare centres. In the absence of such centres, the children will end up on the streets without any supervision. For children whose rights have been violated, abandoned or rejected by their parents, our Center becomes their second home,” shares Namdag.

As we get closer to the end of this financial year, let’s reflect on the importance of giving. Supporting the Don Bosco Caring Center is offering a kind and generous hand to children who need it the most at this stage of their growth.

“Children’s safety can be protected the most in care and welfare centres. Those children who came to our Don Bosco Caring Center when they were little are now learning, maturing and having their safety protected,” shares Namdag.
